Today we are interviewing Mark J. Spinicelli about his new suspense / action novel, titled “Catching a Miracle.”

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I run an audio-visual / entertainment production company in Orlando, FL.

Describe your book, “Catching a Miracle,” in a few sentences.
In 1972, an 8-year-old girl has her cancer disappear overnight. Thirty years later, she is now a doctor specializing in treating pediatric cancer, while trying to find an explanation for her own miracle.

Who do you think would most appreciate this book?
Anyone touched by cancer or those who believe a cure for cancer does exist.

Tell us about the story’s protagonist, Dr. Shelly White.
She is a very strong woman who dedicates her life to save children from the very disease that almost killed her.

Shelly’s mission to cure cancer takes a dramatic turn when she meets Nicholas Harris. Without giving too much away, what can you tell us about Nicholas?
Nick is a successful advertising executive who holds a secret about Dr. Shelly White’s experience as a young cancer patient at St. Theresa’s.

Dr. Shelly White was mysteriously cured from cancer as a child. Does the story delve into how this occurred?
Yes.

There has been a fair amount of conspiracy theories surrounding the notion that profitability is hampering the progress for a cure for cancer. Were you inspired by these theories at all? Did you research these theories for your book?
Cancer is a “gold mine” for anyone involved in treating the disease. The only loser is the patient.

Is there an author that has influenced your writing style?
No, not in particular.

How long have you been writing?
About 5 years.

Who was your favorite character to write/develop?
Colonel John “Hack” Taylor.

“Catching a Miracle” is the first book in a trilogy. What can readers expect from books two and three?
The suspense is mixed in with a bit of humor in book one. Books two and three bring elements of the US federal government into play, namely the US Marshalls Office, the FBI, and even the NSA.

Author Mark J. Spinicelli.

How do you think you've evolved as a writer since when you first started?
I’ve been told by my West Coast, California-based professor & editor that book three, Sparrow in the Fog, is as good as or better than The Maltese Falcon.

Are there any aspects (e.g. character building, world building) of your writing that you've been practicing?
No.

What are your goals as a writer for the next ten years?
My goal is to continue to develop and evolve the characters from the US Marshalls Office, the FBI, NSA, and possibly more.

How have your readers responded to the book so far?
Yes, I’ve been told the story is great and they would like to see it made into a film.

Is there any aspect of writing you don't like?
Editors are ruthless!

On a similar note, what is your favorite aspect of writing?
Making up characters in my head and bringing them to life.

Have you ever had writer's block? If yes, how'd you deal with it? If you have not had writer's block, why do you think you haven't?
I’ve never had any trouble in that area.

What do you have in mind for your next project?
A Senator running for President in book three, Sparrow In The Fog, could be an accessory to the murder of a doctor who claimed to have a cure for a terrible disease.

Is there anything else you'd like potential readers to know about your book?
My hope is these books will lead to film projects that may lead others to realize that this is more than just a story, it is an idea to find a cure that has never been tried before. Greed is a powerful incentive to find the things that are hidden.
